I had a fantastic conversation with Crystal Reynolds from Crystal Ink.

She said she sometimes feels shy about talking to speakers at conferences or events and asked me if I had any tips for her. Here is how I like my post-stage encounters to go:

Step right up. The way I really like to be approached is for people to just come on up. I want to know how my work impacts people and I don’t necessarily get that feedback all the time. I really want to talk to you after a speech as much as you want to talk to me, and I think most speakers feel the same way. So, tell us how our material affected you, what you got out of it and how you use it. Some of my most interesting collaborations have come from post-talk conversations. You just never know what can happen if you step up.

Don’t be afraid of the emotional … I’m not. My work is intense, and sometimes intimate. I mean, I did a video in my bathrobe, for goodness sake! So, sometimes people approach me from a very emotional place and then get self conscious for having gone “there.” Don’t sweat it. I am not afraid of emotions--they are great guides. I look at my speeches as an experience that we co-created because I took a risk. You witnessed my risk and took a risk of your own. Let’s have our work create a cosmic domino effect of Bright Lights+Hidden Truths=Freedom, which can be emotional, very real and awe inspiring.

You‘re going to dork out sometimes … and that’s ok. We get weird around people we admire--I busted OUT into a nervous stammer-sweat-stand-too-close episode when I met one of my heroes recently. I’ve had experiences where folks did really odd social things like interrupting me in mid-conversation with someone else, and blurting something out, grappling me into a big excited hug before even saying hi (all of which is totally fine--I’m not trying to shame anyone here). Just dork out and embrace that moment. Then, stand back, smooth your clothes down and offer me a hand to shake and say, “Hi, my name is _________. I really love your work.”

So, when have you totally dorked out trying to talk to a speaker or a celebrity or whomever? Tell me in the comments below.

WOW. I am still coming down from speaking at the incredible TEDxWomenOjai conference, hosted by Jodi Womack . Since then, I’ve received a new wave of questions and interview requests from folks who are interested in stepping on stage. Here are a few ideas to get you warmed up for your spotlight:

Just start speaking. Okay, that may sound totally obnoxious, but literally show up somewhere and volunteer to speak at a local meet up. Create a Meetup, or find an existing one that suits you, so you can speak in front of at least 5 or 6 people.

Make videos. I sometimes feel like I was sort of cheating by making videos as blog posts (because it was more fun and easier than writing for me), but the videos were the thing that actually let people know that I had something to say and had some on camera talent. It was also great practice for the stage. It’s important to look at speaking as a craft, not just a business-building vehicle. Get your feet wet. Watch yourself. Find and hone your own style before you hit the stage.

You’re going to feel sick. Know that. Before my first big gig, I was comfortable speaking in small groups and facilitating meetings or small events. To be totally honest and without exaggeration, I was still sick to my stomach for six months before my first big speaking gig (in another city, 300+ folks, paid). I was beside myself. It’s just part of the process; it’s totally natural and you know what--it gets a little better, but I’m still nervous before every.single.gig.

Throw out the checklists. You can’t learn to be a great speaker by watching videos or obsessively reading tip sheets (like this one). I don’t care how many instructionals your read, watch or put on your credit card, until you stand on that stage and feel your legs noodle AND you are sweating through your really cute outfit AND you are barfy AND your mouth is all dry AND you can’t remember your name, you won’t start growing as a speaker. You can’t mature until you just do it. It’s like telling a 14-year-old to grow up--wasted breath. You are going to be great--just show up.

Are you spotlight ready? Tell me what you are doing to get there in the comments below.

Our clients are hiring us because, on some level, our stories have synchronized in one or five areas. We trust each other because of the stories and the underlying assumption that we “understand” each other in some way. Everything you share about yourself and your business helps us put together a story. I help my clients decide to consciously choose stories and present them so they can’t be misunderstood. It really boils down to this: if you don’t tell us your story, we’ll make one up.

Are you saying, “easier said than done!” Okay, that’s fair, but I’ve got your ringer (affiliate link). Here is your secret weapon for telling stories in your way, oh, and taking them to market. Danielle LaPorte and Linda Siversten have put together a remarkable, encyclopaedic tome to help you say it like you lived it. Check it out:

I'm writing my first book proposal, so YBBBP is tear-jerkingly on time for me. Not only did I very quickly realize that I was starting with my ass end first, but there was NO TIME TO BITCH ABOUT IT. Danielle and Linda clearly define the action steps -- from each blade of grass to the mountain top -- to get me on the bestseller list and speaking to thousands, not hundreds. Ready to join me? C'mon. Gitty up.

I commented:

Great story! It hit me in the belly. I call it “creator's remorse.” It happens for me .every.single.time. I release something into the world or work with a complex client or project. Every.single.time. Here's what I do to treat the malady:

Tell the whole story: the situation/set up, what happened next, the result, and the after-result (what I felt like afterwards);

Make a list of:

+ Things I'll never do again (never take a client/gig when your gut is telling you to RUN)
+ Things I could have approached differently
+ Things that totally surprised me (that I really couldn't have been ready for)

Finally, I commit to NOT doing the first, systematizing the second, and praying for the third (well, the good ones, at least).

Three BONUS acts of remorse-prevention (always go for prevention versus treatment, right? Right!)

"CUT IT OUT!" Say it out loud. Voice your complaints once, and then start your next project with those adjustments in mind. Are you doing a crappy job at your job? Then sharpen your craft, take a class or get a mentor.

PLAN time for creator's remorse recovery (including bitchfesting). It's taxing to be seen, to put something out in the world. You suddenly see it as if you are seeing it through 10,000 others’ eyes. You know how different a new boyfriend or girlfriend looks after you've introduced them to your friends? Yeah, like that. So, PLAN for it. Set a walk&talk date with a friend who will listen with a scribe’s ear to hear the things that might actually be useful to you and forgive the gripe-fest parts. Then, listen back to your friend, say, “thank you for listening” and then pat yourself on the back for making art or doing your job or taking the risk to go big and belly flop.

Get a hobby to distract yourself while you come down from post-completion syndrome so you have something to do with your hands besides shovel chocolate covered potato chips (damn you, Trader Joes!).

As for Melanie? Following our Facebook exchange, she had this to say:

I think accepting and planning for the fact that I will feel this way will help a lot. I am planning to not dive into the editing straight after the event but mourn a bit for a day and then tackle it because this way I can put some distance between the exhausted “I just shot a wedding” feeling and the dread of looking at the photos. And maybe accepting that all is not as bad as I see it and try to see it through my clients’ eyes will help.

Your turn: do you have creator's remorse? What do you do about it? Tell me in the comments, puh-leeze. Thank you.

_ _ _

Now share the anti-creator’s remorse love with a friend with these handy pre-made tweets:

If you can't view this 2:37 video click here. If you dig it and want to see us go even deeper, click here.

When my friend, Shelley said, "how you eat tells me something about how you do everything." *Gulp* I suddenly felt vulnerable and nervous. Dive in to this deep interview and let me know HOW you have eaten, related and loved today.

Shelley really called me out and raised my eyebrows and taste buds--even though we did this interview about a week ago--I'm STILL setting my mind on "joy" or "calm" or "slow it down" before I take in food or even when I pick up the phone. For those of us celebrating U.S. Thanksgiving, this might be a great week to practice. Oh, and for a juicy, extra special bonus, check out Shelley's new book Tantric Tastes: Dessert For Lovers (affiliate link). Keep life funky and foxy, everyone.

Hotlights for those of you who are reading in a rush (please check out the full interview on Shelley's blog here, we had a a lot of fun):

Cravings are signals or tools--don't knock them until you've listened to them;

If you eat with joy in mind, you digest more effectively;

Find out about your body's intelligent ecology (yep, get down on some new BIG words now); and

Put some "love ketchup" on your food! Explore your own Spiritual Condiments.

Go beyond, "you are what you eat." Follow Shelley's lead and put some Yippee! on your plate with those mashed potatoes. I'd love to hear your stories about how food impacts your world. Please share in the comments.

Can’t see this 9 minute long video? Click here.

I resist it when people call me a motivational speaker. I call myself an instigator and emcee. During a recent interview with the wonderful Crystal Reynolds, I spoke about why I call myself an instigator and how I get my groove on from the stage.

When you volunteer to come to a conference or one of my workshops, you arrive with your own motivation. I’m not there in the front of that room to fill your vessel; I’m there to play with that excitement that’s already percolating and bouncing around inside you and to turn it up.

I’m also totally there for me. You heard me. I get a real kick the energy that naturally springs up in a room of hundreds (and looking forward to thousands) of people. Speaking gigs allow me to polish my craft while raising the vibration of a community of people.

I’m not a motivational speaker. I’m not there to talk and rant and tell you to get off your butt and write a book or start a business or bake apple pies or whatever that thing you’re meant to do is. I’m there to instigate you to make good decisions, to teach you how to test ideas and to talk your walk.

How about you? What do you call yourself and why? Please leave your story in the comments below. Even better, go check out ALX Franzen's incredible post Tell Us Who You Are, No, Seriously. She's brilliant.

This week, we’ve got Kate Swoboda aka Kate Courageous of Your Courageous Life. Kate pads her time to keep from stressing out over deadlines. Most importantly she teaches us not to measure your worth based on what you finish.

More of Kate's tidbit morsels (perfectly portioned for tweeting) are:

Pad your time. If your deadline is Fri. make a personal deadline for Weds. @katecourageous @dyanavalentine http://bit.ly/qe4Rgf

You are more than what you finish. Don't measure your worth by what you finish. @katecourageous @dyanavalentine http://bit.ly/qe4Rgf

When you are stuck and out of juice, just let it go. @katecourageous @dyanavalentine http://bit.ly/qe4Rgf
