How Do I Get Ready for a Job Interview?
Congratulations! You’ve been asked to interview for a job. There are a few steps you can take to ensure the interview process goes as smoothly as possible. Pro tip: the more preparation you do to prepare for the interview, the less nervous you will be.
Step 1: Look up the company to see what they do.
This will show employers you are truly interested in their company, and have taken the application process seriously. Go to their website and make sure you understand what they do, why they do it and what they take pride in as a company. You should also read the about page and bios of any senior level employers to gain a better understanding of the company and its culture.
Step 2: Think about how you will answer these common interview questions:
What’s your greatest strength/weakness? State a weakness that maybe isn’t that bad or explain how you’re improving it.
Why do you want this job? (Don’t just say you need a job or money! Come up with something you like about that job or something you would look forward to doing as part of the job.
Why should we hire you over the others? Highlight your strengths. Are you a hard worker? People-person? A team player? What skills or experience do you offer that may be different from what someone else offers?
Step 3: Make a good first impression on the day of the interview:
Dress nicely, have a neat clean appearance. Try to find out whether it’s a casual or formal environment when you are researching the company.
Arrive early (10 minutes is good).
Be polite to all staff, from the parking lot to your interviewer.
Make good eye contact and have a firm handshake.
This is important in many company cultures. It conveys confidence, respect and that the person can trust you.
Show interest and enthusiasm for the position/company.
